Freedom Maine Community Historical Society

In 1976 in observance of the National Bicentennial year, a small group of Maine citizens were inspired to organize the Freedom Historical Society. This dedicated group has published several historical booklets, held many living history programs, begun an archives collection (through a Maine State Archives grant), and has nearly completed restoration of Freedom's old 1853 Town Meeting House, with support from Maine Historic Preservation.

In July 2013, the Society led the Town in planning, organizing and implementing "Let Freedom Ring," Freedom's own Bicentennial Celebration, with support from a small Maine Community Foundation grant. That celebration brought the whole Town together in a spirit of cooperation and renewed sense of pride in our history. Events included publication of a souvenir booklet, a standing-room-only program in the Old Town Meeting House, exhibits from our archives, a parade, craft fair, horse shoe tournament, antique car show, live music concert, horse show, and fireworks.

Our group of capable and energetic volunteers understands our mission to preserve the past as a valuable resource for renewing and rebuilding our community's future. Last year we became a 501(c)(3) to broaden our potential base of support as "Freedom Community Historical Society." Our first ambitious project has been to purchase Keen Hall, now designated by the State Historic Preservation Commission as one of ten "Most Endangered Historically Significant Properties" in Maine.
